lear when the soon-to-be Miami Open champion celebrated winning a point during their showdown. A lengthy rally ended with the Czech teenager getting the point, returning a lob with a stunning backhand smash.
Mensik then clenched his fist in celebration while his opponent could only watch on from the other side of the court, visibly seething as the camera panned to Djokovic’s disappointed face.
Djokovic may have been angered at the way the point panned out and the circumstances he played in, with a swollen eye, high humidity and lengthy delays due to rain.
But Mensik appeared to think that his show of passion after a long rally was the reason why Djokovic stared him down, offering an apology for celebrating by lifting his hand with a wave.
But there was no let-up from the hard-hitting rising star. He defeated Djokovic 7-6(4), 7-6(4) in just his second ATP final, hammering home 14 aces before collapsing onto the court.

The new champion did have some very kind words to say about Djokovic during his victory speech, saying:“Novak, everyone knows you’re the one… the reason I’m here. I watched you growing up. I started to play tennis because of you.
“There is not a harder task for a tennis player than to beat you in the final of a tournament. Thank you so much for everything you’ve done in this sport and for everyone. You’re an incredible person. The greatest of all time.”
While any frustrated feelings that Djokovic may have had for his opponent appeared to mellow by the time that Mensik was crowned the Miami Open victor.
“I don’t wanna talk too much,” Djokovic said. “This is Jakub’s moment and a moment for his team and family. Congratulations. Unbelievable tournament. First of many. It hurts me to admit it but you were better. In the clutch moments you delivered the goods. Unbelievable serving.
“Just a phenomenal effort mentally to stay in the difficult moments. For a young player like yourself this is a great feature. Something you’ll use many times in the years to follow. I wish you the best of luck. Maybe you’ll let me win one of the next times we play.”
