Andy Murray took to social media with a hilarious post after getting the chance to meet Lionel Messi at the Miami Open. A number of big-name celebrities have been spotted at this year’s tournament, with the likes of Millie Bobby Brown and her husband Jake Bongiovi stealing the show earlier this week.

Messi was among the stars in attendance to watch Novak Djokovic beat Grigor Dimitrov on Saturday. The legendary footballer, who plays for Inter Miami, was sat in the crowd with his young family as Djokovic secured a routine victory in straight sets. He will face Jakub Mensik in Sunday’s final.

Murray, who has been coaching Djokovic since the build-up to the Australian Open, had the chance to exchange pleasantries with Messi after the match. They posed for a picture together, with Murray posting it on his Instagram profile alongside a hilarious caption.

The two-time Wimbledon champion wrote: “I asked him if he could do it on a cold, rainy night in Stoke. He responded ‘callate la boca’ which I think means ‘yes’ in Spanish.” In reality, the phrase translates to ‘shut up’ or ‘shut your mouth’.

Murray finished his caption with the flags of Scotland and Argentina, accompanied by a red heart. He is known to be a huge admirer of Messi, saying before his retirement that he was inspired to keep playing after watching the legendary forward win the World Cup.

“I was really happy for him that he was able to finally win the World Cup when he was seen as not having done it at international level, which was strange considering that Argentina won the Copa America not long ago and have been in multiple finals and stuff,” said Murray.

“The age that he’s at as well, he’s 35 and born in the same year as me. Seeing any athletes in their mid-to-late thirties going out there and competing and performing and doing what they love is brilliant.”

Djokovic, meanwhile, admitted to being nervous about playing in front of Messi following his victory over Dimitrov at the Miami Open.

“It’s a great honour to have King Leo in the stands,” he said. “I think it’s the first time I’ve played in front of Messi, and honestly, I was a little nervous.

“I am very grateful for his attendance with his family. I have always been a fan of him, as most of the world has, throughout his career.”
