Greg Gutfeld stands out as an unconventional figure among Fox News personalities, yet he is increasingly aligning with the traditional image associated with the Fox Corp.-backed cable network.Fox News is anticipated to announce the completion of a contract extension with Gutfeld, underscoring his significance to the network’s operations, despite his differing style from that of Sean Hannity or Laura Ingraham. As part of this agreement, Gutfeld will maintain his role as a co-host on the roundtable show “The Five” and continue his 10 p.m. program, “Gutfeld!,” which offers a more relaxed perspective on current events. This approach aims to attract younger viewers who might otherwise tune into late-night shows like “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” on CBS or “The Daily Show” on Comedy Central. The third anniversary of the 10 p.m. program is set to be celebrated this Friday.
Additionally, Gutfeld is expected to host and produce select content for the Fox Nation streaming service.
“Greg is a true original whose distinctive political and cultural insights, humor, and exceptional writing have resonated with our audience for over 17 years,” stated Suzanne Scott, CEO of Fox News Media. “Since the launch of ‘Gutfeld!’ three years ago, he has swiftly transformed the landscape to become the most-watched host in his category, attracting more viewers than any other late-night show on television. We take pride in being the home of Greg, his unmatched analysis, and the highest-rated late-night program for many years to come.”
Fox News views Gutfeld, represented by CAA, as a prime example of the potential of its home-grown talent. A former magazine editor known for stirring controversy by hiring individuals to create disruptions at a trade conference, Gutfeld joined Fox News in 2007 to host the occasionally chaotic program “Red Eye,” which aired at 2 a.m. He eventually transitioned to “The Five,” where executives were impressed by the strong rapport he quickly developed with co-host Dana Perino.
The program has emerged as the most-viewed show on the network and within the realm of cable news.
Gutfeld has also maintained a presence in late-night television by hosting a Saturday program at 10 p.m., and in 2021, he transitioned segments of that show to a regular weekday slot at 11 p.m.
“Since I joined the network in 2007, Fox News has allowed me the freedom to express my true self, which in turn enables me to provide a unique experience for our audience,” Gutfeld stated. “Few platforms offer this level of creative autonomy, and I take pride in being part of Suzanne’s team.”
Fox News encourages comparisons of “Gutfeld” with other late-night offerings, even though his show does not directly compete with them at 11 p.m. or 11:30 p.m. Humor and satire are genres that tend to attract younger male audiences, so including “Gutfeld” in the late-night lineup could capture viewers who are essential for Fox News as older demographics gradually depart from the network.
According to Nielsen, “Gutfeld!” attracts a larger audience than the typical late-night shows and surpasses “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” and the Monday episode of Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show,” hosted by Jon Stewart, in viewership among individuals aged 18 to 49. Since its debut in 2021, Gutfeld has expanded his overall audience by 47% and increased his viewership among the 18 to 49 age group by 10%.
He maintains a specific standard for his humor. “Is this a cheap shot? Is it necessary? And is it surprising or different?” he posed to Variety in 2021. “That’s what drives me.”
