American Idol Reveals Its Top 7 Contestants On “Judges’ Song Contest Night”
Fan-favorite American Idol contestants Breanna Nix and Mattie Pruitt competed for a spot in the Top 7 on Monday (May 5). The theme of the evening was “Judges’ Song Contest Night,” as each contestant selected a song chosen for them by the judges.
The singers were presented with a list of three songs, not knowing which judge chose which song. Then, the contestant selected a song and learned who picked it for them after singing it.
The judge with the most chosen songs won bragging rights. Additionally, they got the power to pick a “wildcard” contestant to save from elimination at the end of the night.
Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie tied for the most songs selected, so they consulted each other to choose a “wildcard” contestant.
Initially, America’s votes saved six of the Top 8 singers. The six contestants who were immediately saved included:
The two remaining contestants, Mattie Pruitt and Josh King, were left in jeopardy. Luke and Lionel debated over who to save as the “wildcard” before ultimately choosing Mattie.
She earned the final spot in the Top 7, while sadly, Josh was sent home.
Breanna Nix And Mattie Pruitt Unite For Gorgeous Tribute To Carrie Underwood
Before the results were revealed, the contestants joined forces to honor the judges with collaborative performances.
Slater Nalley, John Foster, and Thunderstorm Artis formed a trio to pay tribute to Luke Bryan with “Huntin’, Fishin’ and Lovin’ Every Day.” Gabby Samone, Jamal Roberts, and Josh King honored Lionel Richie with “Dancing on the Ceiling.”
Breanna Nix and Mattie Pruitt became a duo to pay tribute to Carrie Underwood by covering her faith-based single, “Something in the Water.”
The song gave Breanna and Mattie the chance to showcase the power and beauty of their voices. They took turns singing solo, reaching for sky-high notes and hitting them effortlessly. But some of the best moments came when they united and sang together, blending their voices in a sweet symphony of sound.
Their performance left Carrie teary-eyed at the end. She took a second to pull herself together before thanking Breanna and Mattie for their spectacular tribute.
“That was really wonderful … it was just beautiful, and I feel very honored right now, so thank you,” Carrie said.
