Sharing his excitement, John Foster expressed, “I can’t believe it! I made it to the #Top10 on @americanidol! 🎉 A massive THANK YOU to everyone who has supported me—this journey wouldn’t be possible without you. Let’s keep it going! 🤍 #Idol.” His heartfelt message resonates with fans, reinforcing that his success isn’t just about him, but about everyone who’s been there cheering him on. During the April 28 episode of American Idol, the top 12 performed songs that represented “iconic Idol moments.” John Foster threw it back to 2009 when Randy Travis and now-judge Carrie Underwood performed “I Told You So” on the show.
“Carrie Underwood has really been my voice on the panel,” John explained. “In my first audition, she asked me to sing a second song, and if I didn’t, Luke [Bryan] would’ve been a no. This is my way of saying, ‘I love you, Carrie. Thanks for all the support.’”
John began his performance sitting on a stool, but after receiving guidance from mentor Fantasia Barrino, he walked toward the audience and judges’ table, finishing right in front of Underwood. He sweetly tipped his hat to her as a tribute.
“I’m blushing!” Underwood exclaimed. “I love that every challenge, you push yourself to try new things—whether it’s different songs or losing the guitar. Watching you grow every time you hit the stage is amazing. I’m sure Randy Travis would’ve loved that performance.”
Bryan chimed in, asking John, “You know Carrie’s husband is a hockey player, right?” Underwood laughed, adding, “My husband’s a big man!” Underwood, who has been married to retired NHL star Mike Fisher since 2010, was all smiles.
“[John’s] up there singing directly to Carrie!” Bryan joked. “Boy, you better get back there!” John smiled and assured Underwood, “All respect, all respect.”
Carrie Underwood Calls Teen ‘American Idol’ Contestant ‘Cute’ Before the commercial break, Ryan Seacrest asked Underwood, “Is your husband watching?” and she replied, “Of course!”

What happened to John Foster’s friend Maggie Dunn? During the April 20 episode of American Idol, John performed an original song, “Tell That Angel That I Love Her,” which he wrote after the death of his close friend Maggie Dunn in 2022.
Maggie and Caroline Gill tragically lost their lives on New Year’s Eve when a police officer collided with their car while in pursuit of a suspect driving a stolen vehicle. Maggie’s brother, who was seriously injured in the crash, was also in the car.
Maggie’s mother was in the audience during John’s emotional performance. She later shared on Unfiltered With Kiran that Maggie had written John a letter as part of a junior English assignment, encouraging him to keep chasing his dream, because she believed in his talent.
